Ventura, Calif. - The City of Ventura is excited to announce the reopening of Buenaventura Golf Course on Friday, May 2, 2025. The course has been closed since January 2023 as a result of extensive storm damage to buildings, equipment, and golf course features. The opening represents the first phase of a larger plan to design and integrate flood mitigation improvements that will protect the course from future flood events.
While long-term restoration efforts continue, the City has sufficiently restored 14-holes, and possibly more in the future, to allow for transitional play during redesign and reconstruction preparation.
“Buenaventura Golf Course has long been a community favorite, and we’re excited to welcome golfers back,” said Mayor Dr. Jeannette Sanchez-Palacios. “This temporary course represents a major milestone as we work toward a full rebuild with long-term resiliency in mind.”
Following the January 2023 storm, the City took swift action to remove contaminated silt and begin damage assessment. This effort prevented catastrophic course damage and made it possible to reopen most of the course with minimal restoration effort and cost. During the damage assessment process it was determined that restoration to original course condition alone would not address persistent flooding and drainage issues in a mapped floodplain environment. As a result, the City was compelled to consider a different approach to restoration efforts that would also include flood mitigation and protection elements in order to maintain FEMA public assistance funding eligibility.
“The reopening of Buenaventura reflects the City’s commitment to recovery, innovation, and community wellbeing,” said City Manager Bill Ayub. “We know how much this facility means to local residents and visitors alike, and this step ensures continued access to the game while we plan for a stronger, more resilient future course.”
The City continues to collaborate with floodplain engineers and golf course design experts to create a sustainable design that addresses future storm impacts.
Tee times for the 14-hole course can be booked starting 10 days prior to the reopening by visiting www.buenaventuragolf.com.
