Ventura, Calif. — The Ventura Police Department invites local teens to step behind the scenes of real police work as applications open for the Teen Explorer Program. Designed for high school students ages 14–18, the program offers a rare, hands-on look at law enforcement while helping young people build confidence, leadership skills, and lasting connections in their community.
For many participants, becoming an Explorer is more than an extracurricular activity, it’s a pathway to discovering purpose and finding a place to serve. Participants train alongside Ventura police officers, take part in ride-alongs, learn defensive tactics, assist with community events, and explore everything from evidence collection to city government operations. The program blends career exploration with real-world responsibility, giving students experiences they can’t find in a classroom.
“We see firsthand how this program changes lives,” said Explorer Program Advisor, Sergeant Chris Bridges. “Explorers gain confidence, discipline, and a sense of belonging. Some find their calling in law enforcement, while others simply age-out of the program better prepared for whatever future they choose. Watching them grow is one of the most rewarding things we do.”
To qualify, applicants must be in high school, maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher, live or attend school in Ventura, pass a background screening, and commit to regular meetings and trainings.
Since its launch in 2022, the Teen Explorer Program has developed into one of the department’s strongest youth engagement efforts. The program currently includes
16 active Explorers and has graduated more than 30 young men and women from the Explorer Academy. The impact lasts well beyond high school: 10 former Explorers have gone on to serve as Ventura Police cadets, and together, participants have volunteered over 3,000 hours to support community events, traffic safety details, and public outreach efforts.
An Open House will be hosted early 2026 for applicants to meet officers, ask questions, and prepare for program interviews.
Applications are now open and will be accepted through Wednesday, January 9, 2025. For more information and to apply, visit www.cityofventura.ca.gov/Explorers.
