Visit Ventura’s Julie Madsen Honored with International Future Leader Award

City Nation Place recognizes Madsen’s efforts in place brand marketing leadership with this year’s Future Leader Award honor.

For Immediate Release:

Ventura, Calif. (November 19, 2025) – Visit Ventura is proud to announce that Julie Madsen, PR and Communications Manager, has been awarded the City Nation Place Future Leader Award, an international honor recognizing rising talent in destination marketing.

“Julie has quickly emerged as a tourism leader in our community. She is bright, engaging, curious and passionate about Ventura,” said Brian Pendleton, Visit Ventura Board Chair and Port District General Manager. “Julie quickly connects the dots and brings stakeholders, business partners and community members together in new ways that showcase the Ventura brand and grow our tourism industry.”

Madsen, a Ventura native, served as the liaison for the X Games in 2023, the City’s largest event in history. By 2024, she led the effort independently, organizing high-profile media moments, building standout partnerships, and contributing to the team's award-winning work.

Her innovative ideas  —including securing a quote from California Governor Gavin Newsom, a first for the organization, and creating partnerships with well-known influencers— have become essential parts of Visit Ventura's brand.

Madsen was one of three finalists, the other nominees hailing from Destination Canada and Seattle Southside Regional Tourism Authority

According to the award nomination, Madsen’s work is hands-on and heartfelt. She develops ideas that bring people together, elevate storytelling, and strengthen the community. Whether coordinating media or supporting major events, Madsen’s professionalism and steady approach ensure purposeful projects.

Because of Madsen’s contributions and leadership during her time on staff, the Visit Ventura team and Board of Directors nominated her for the recognition.

“Julie’s trajectory shows what happens when talent, humility, and purpose come together,” said Marlyss Auster, President and CEO of Visit Ventura. “Her impact is already being felt, and we look forward to her continuous growth here at Visit Ventura.”

“In such a short amount of time, Julie has navigated a couple of large-scale events with ease,” said Visit Ventura’s Director of Marketing Mike Laan. “When Julie is thrown a project or task, I know she will rise to the occasion. She was thrown right into two X Games events, which taught her a lot about marketing and communications and showed us that Julie is someone who jumps in and embraces new challenges and opportunities. We're all very proud of her and know that she'll go far.”

City Nation Place connects place branding and marketing leaders worldwide and celebrates the brand strategies and excellence of cities, regions, and nations.

“It’s clear to see that the future of place branding rests in safe hands. Julie’s ongoing commitment and passion were evident throughout her nomination, and we were so impressed with the calibre of testimonials that she received from external partners,” said Claire Dewhirst, Director of City Nation Place. “It’s clear that Julie is an invaluable member of the Visit Ventura team, and we look forward to seeing how she continues to grow into her role.”

The City Nation Place international jury noted Madsen’s passion for Ventura, her strategic thinking, her bravery in proposing new ideas, and her stakeholder engagement skills as key qualities of a future place brand leader. Madsen has quickly become a rising voice in destination marketing, earning the trust of partners and community members through her leadership approach.

“I feel lucky every day to do what I love, and do it for the town I grew up in and call home,” said Madsen. “I am beyond honored and humbled to receive this recognition, not only from the City Nation Place jury, but also from my entire team and board of directors. It’s always a team effort; I am proud and grateful to do this work with such an incredible community.”
