Mexico City Native Juliana Ramirez Fights Through Near-Impossible Odds to Become a Successful Entrepreneur and Employer
Juliana Ramirez, who immigrated from Mexico as a teenager and suffered a series of potentially-devastating personal and financial setbacks as an adult, is now celebrating her 5th year as a successful business owner.
A remarkable comeback story, Ramirez is a glowing example of an immigrant who came to the United States with little and worked hard to become a successful, valuable member of society. Today her company, JR Bookkeeping, serves nearly 100 businesses, employs five people, and is a growing and active part of the Ventura County business community.
Ramirez was a teenager in the 90s, when her family migrated from Mexico to the United States and settled in Carpinteria. Initially speaking only Spanish, she studied hard in school, learned English, and landed a job as an administrative assistant at a small office in Carpinteria. Her employer realized that she had a knack for numbers and encouraged her to take accounting classes at Santa Barbara City College, which she did, earning all A’s and B’s.
That was the beginning of Juliana’s career as an accountant.
However, in 2010, Juliana’s then-employer noticed her that they had made the di cult decision to sell the business, leaving Juliana without a job. To complicate things, she was pregnant with her second daughter, and her husband Noe had just been laid off. Going into 2011, the young family now faced what would prove to be a dark season of personal hardship and financial disaster.
Fortunately, in late 2011, Juliana finally found employment with a small business development firm in Oxnard. Having 11 accounting clients on the roster but wanting to take the company in a different direction, the owner encouraged Juliana to take those 11 clients and start her own accounting business.
Juliana took that advice, and on April 1st, 2012, JR Bookkeeping opened its doors.
In the face of near-impossible odds, Juliana’s story is a powerful testimony to the American Dream and what hard work and determination can accomplish. “When we were pregnant, unemployed and living on credit cards, I literally had no idea what we were going to do,” she recalls. “Thankfully, through a lot of really hard work and a few key relationships, I’ve been able to get into a position where I’m not just surviving, but am actually able to give back to our community by providing jobs for others. It’s a great feeling to watch your dreams grow and become a reality that actually helps other people.”
To mark this special occasion, JR Bookkeeping will be holding a celebration on Wednesday, April 5th, from 5-7pm, at their Ventura office at 3639 Harbor Boulevard, Suite 214.
